To cap off a long day, many of us (if not all!) simply want to troop to the bedroom and get some rest. As our private sanctuary, bedrooms are supposed to be clean, organized, and relaxing. Aside from making sure it’s free from clutter, the colors make it a comforting and calming space.

We all have our go-to picks when it comes to bedroom colors: pastels for the kiddie spaces and neutrals for the parents’ rooms. While these are safe choices, you don’t have to limit yourself to these color options.

We asked an interior designer for tips on the colors you can work with if you’re planning a quick bedroom makeover.

A pro tip before giving your bedroom a new look: if you want to revamp your bedrooms with a fresh coat of paint, you don’t always have to paint the walls!

“It’s best to use color in a big way by painting an accent wall or using a large solid-colored rug. Adding a pop of color in a neutral room will help you break out of your ‘beige-on-beige’ room,” says interior designer Angelica Dumalus.

Color for kiddie rooms

Angelica says you don't need to stick to one color for a kid’s bedroom as long as you have a theme in mind. “You can go crazy by mixing colors since it’s a kid’s room after all. If you’re a bit scared of taking the plunge, you can stick to not more than three colors,” she adds.

To get started, you can work with muted colors to make the bedroom flexible enough even up to the teenage years of your kids. For a bold pop, you can bring in touches of yellow, green, and tan.

Blush has been a favorite these past few years because it’s cool and easy on the eyes. Aside from this sweet and subtle option, you can also work with navy blue, gray, and accents of white.

“For parents, I think it’s more of a tranquil, relaxing space they’re looking for. It’s something timeless and classic. After a long day at work and taking care of the children, you can’t blame them if they want to lie down and relax,” explains Angelica. To achieve the serene, hotel-like vibe, colors like gray, beige, wood, and shades of white are perfect for mom and dad’s master bedroom.

These colors are just suggestions! Feel free to make the room your own. You can also ask for your kids’ inputs when decorating their rooms. Put their favorite things on display and don’t forget to make room for framed photos, too!
