We all know that white can make small spaces appear much bigger, but what if you’re looking for more colorful—and updated—options? Here are some bold, brash hues you might want to try in your condo unit or small home.

Lime green

This bright chartreuse hue can feel a bit 1990s when used the wrong way, but when painted in a funky, bohemian bedroom, it feels new and tropical. Interior designer John Vigilia used fresh lime paint in this Avida Centera bedroom, which looks amazing with all the richly hued boho fabrics and accessories. This paint color is Cabin Moss from Boysen.

Pink and gray

The Morfosis team of Pai Edles and Misty Flores nixed the expected all-white for this modernist take on a Robinsons Sapphire Bloc condo unit and used soft pink and medium cool gray, instead. The unexpected pairing creates a mood that is modern, fresh, Japanese in feel, with a girly-but-gritty vibe. For this look, try Star Princess (pink) and Grayson Borough (medium gray) from Boysen.

Turquoise blue

A bold, bright color can anchor a space and make an instant statement, which will offset simple, modern furniture. The vibrant turquoise hue in this condo unit by interior designer and RL stylist Tala Singson defines the entire room, and creates the perfect contrast against the white furniture. Try Enchanted River paint from Boysen.

Robins’-egg blue

Tiffany or robins’-egg blue paint is fantastic if you want to make a room look delicate, but not too girly. This bedroom in the Maven model unit, which was designed by Heim Interiors, is equal parts glam-retro and Scandinavian. A nice Tiffany blue hue is Tiffany Morning from Boysen.

Black

Contrary to the notion that black makes an object recede, interior designer Kristine Neri-Magturo made a brave move by painting a kitchen wall in this Avida Centera model unit in black chalkboard paint (a chalk pattern is drawn onto it—it’s a handy surface for notes and recipes). The black paint creates an instant accent wall on what would have been an all-white space. The ceiling beam above the kitchen is de-emphasized with the same paint.
