4 Easy Ways to Revamp Your Kitchen Island

It can double as a bookshelf, too!

We’ve seen many homes with kitchen islands—each serving a specific purpose. Some separate the cooking space from the dining area and a few also double as extra prep and storage space or even as a breakfast nook.

If you have a kitchen island at home, you might want to spruce it up with a few exciting ideas, too! Since it can be a stand out in an area, you need to make sure that it’s lovely and can add some zest to your space. If you’re looking for a couple of ideas you can try, here are four that you can work on:

Create a message and inventory center

Many of us turn the refrigerator into a notes center—with messages, bills, and delivery receipts stuck on the door using magnets. If you leave too many notes on the ref, it can turn your piece into an eyesore and give your kitchen a cluttered look.

A fun solution would be to turn a wooden kitchen island into an instant blackboard. Paint one side using clakboard paint and feel free to write recipes and a list of things to buy. Your kids can even draw and doodle on the surface!

RL Tip: Not yet ready to transform your island? Consider attaching illustration boards instead! It can be weekend DIY project that you can work on with the help of your kids.

Experiment with paint and new knobs

If you've recently repurposed an old furniture piece or a vintage dresser into a kitchen island, now is the perfect time to give it a fresh coat of paint. Choose a hue that works well with your kitchen's color scheme. You can also consider creating a statement by opting for a vibrant green or blue shade.

Once done, check the knobs and handles (if it has built-in cabinets and drawers). If the existing ones are still in good condition, polish and wipe each thoroughly. However, if you're thinking of going all out with the transformation, you can choose to replace all the knobs with a metallic or quirky piece. Click here for options.

Turn your mobile island into an efficient storage spot

In small spaces, mobile carts serve as extra prep area and storage for utensils and dinnerware. Make the most of your cart by adding small baskets and catchalls for utensils and small bowls. Having small compartments can make it easier for you to get and return the pieces that you need. You can also use the mobile cart as storage station for condiments, jars of ingredients, and the like.

RL Tip: Does you cart look too open? Maximize a weekend afternoon by crafting a mini curtain that you can attach to your cart. This conceals the items that you have—especially if you haven't had the time to organize your essentials yet!

Craft a nook for your cookbooks and favorite reads

If your kitchen island has an extra shelf, you can turn it into a mini library where you can keep and display some of your favorite cookbooks. Having these guides within reach can make it easier for you to double check recipes and measurements. Arrange your books per size or even per course—use heavy mason jars as DIY bookends or quirky pieces that are associated with cooking.
