Q: Since we are young newlyweds, my husband and I are living in his parents' spare bedroom. While this set-up is practical, it is a bit uncomfortable because we are worried that other people can hear our conversations. Can you recommend easy tips to soundproof our room?

A: It's one thing to share a home, but another to share your private conversations. Here are a few ways to create a soundproof bedroom:

  • Place a sound barrier like a large bookcase or a wooden armoire against a common wall.
  • Opt for thick curtains, padded furniture, and a soft rug to keep the noise inside.
  • You can also place rubber weather-stripping around small spaces and cracks above and in between doors and windows.
