Interior Designer Wilmer Lopez shares some helpful insights:

What should I keep in mind before starting to paint?

In any painting project, consider the following:

  • Type of surface
  • Size of the area to be painted
  • Whether it is for interior or exterior
  • Type of finish you would like to achieve

Answering these questions will help determine your budget and required skill.

What kind of paint should I use for different surfaces?

"When painting wooden surfaces, it is best to use enamel paint," says Wilmer. Enamel paints are oil-based and adhere to wooden surfaces easily. You can use oil tinting colors to mix with your enamel paint to achieve the desired color. For concrete walls and cement, latex paints are best. “Latex paints are water based and have a certain rubber element to them. Acrycolors are used to mix the painter’s desired color,” he adds. When painting steel gates and metals, Wilmer says the surface must first be coated with anti-rust paint, which is also available in hardware stores. “After the primer coat, you can use enamel paint to finish. I discourage the use of latex paint because it can peel off easily because of its rubbery texture,” Wilmer says.

When you’re just re-painting, however, “you can actually use most types of paints on any kind of surface,” he adds.
