Throw your trash properly

Curate your items and throw those that are broken and cannot be used anymore. The list of items that you can throw out include moldy, irreparable pieces. For items that you can still save such as furniture that can be reupholstered should be kept to avoid buying new ones. You can also make money by selling some of your items to the nearest junk shop.

Give away second-lifers

Do you have things that you don’t really need, but are still in good condition? Donate them because someone else might need it. Communities in the process of rebuilding may appreciate your old toys, books, kitchenware, and bed linen, to name a few.

RL Tip: You can also hold a garage sale in your neighborhood. Make sure you ask the building/village association for permission and prepare a garage sale signage in big, bold letters. Click here to learn more about garage sale basics.

Keep sentimental items

If you own items such as old family photos or your wedding gown that you can’t buy replacements for, keep it. If you’re having a hard time deciding what should be deemed indispensable, pretend that you’ll be moving to another country. With imaginary prohibitive shipping costs in mind, you will pare and whittle down your possessions to the most important ones.

Create a recycling system

Help out the environment by sorting out your garbage into biodegradable and non-biodegradable bins. Once you have that recycling system in place, reduce clutter by making regular trips to the junk shop to sell old newspapers, cans, and even glass bottles. Reuse items when possible, like ice cream canisters, take-out boxes or shoeboxes as alternative storage to minimize waste
