Worried About Viruses At Home? 5 Ways To Clean And Disinfect Your Surroundings
Make sure every nook and cranny is germ-free!
These days, it’s easy to get praning about the safety and cleanliness of every surface and area inside the house. After all, viruses and germs, which can cause sickness, are invisible to the naked eye.
It’s important to clean and disinfect surfaces in your home — and make sure to do both regularly! Remember, cleaning only reduces germs, dirt, and impurities while disinfecting kills them.
Put on a pair of gloves and follow these practical tips to do the job properly:
1. Use a household disinfectant or diluted bleach for all-around disinfection.
First, clean high-touch surfaces like chairs, tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, sinks, and the like with soap or detergent and water. Then, use a household disinfectant, following the instructions on the label, to disinfect them. You may also use unexpired diluted bleach in case the former isn’t available.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends making a bleach solution with five tablespoons of bleach for every gallon of room-temperature water. Apply the solution on the surface for at least one minute before wiping it off.
2. Wipe or launder soft surfaces with soap and water.
For soft surfaces like rugs, carpets, pillows, couches with fabric surfaces, and the like, clean as usual by washing. Another option is to wipe the surface using a cleaning cloth with soap or detergent and water or use an appropriate cleaning solution depending on the type of fabric.
To disinfect, use a household disinfectant. Don’t forget to dry completely by vacuuming or hanging these items under the sun.
3. Use alcohol-based wipes for electronics.
Electronics like computer keyboards, smartphones, accessories, remote controls, and the like are high-touch surfaces, too. Use wipes containing 70-percent alcohol and carefully clean the exterior parts only.
Do not spray cleaning solutions directly on the electronics or submerge them in it to avoid damage. Never use bleach, too.
4. Wash clothes and linen with warm water.
Did you know that germs from our body and the surroundings stay and spread through clothes and linen, too? Often, it happens when these items are used by more than one person, when handling dirty laundry with bare hands, and when clothes are washed.
Use warm water and detergent to wash clothes and linen. “High-risk” items like poo-, sweat-, or vomit-soiled garments and shared towels must be washed separately with a bleach-based product. Then, use your dryer to dry these in high heat or hang them under direct sunlight, where the sun’s ultraviolet light can help disinfect these items.
5. Use an air purifier to help clean indoor air.
Yes, the air inside your home needs cleaning, too! Inhaling fine particles from pollutants like fumes from cleaning products, dust mites, mold, allergens, and more can worsen health problems, especially those affecting the lungs and the heart.
The key is to ventilate indoor air with clean outdoor air. But in case this isn’t enough or not possible, an air purifier can help you as it is designed to sanitize indoor air. Choose from an array of models depending on your needs, such as those with filters that trap particles as air runs through them, and those that emit anions or negative ions to neutralize particles in the air.
If you’re on the lookout for a hardworking air purifier, the Pure Air 10 and Pure Air 30 by JML Philippines are convenient and easy-to-use options.
The Pure Air Purifier 10 (P5,99.75 SRP) is a compact model that promises to help improve the quality of sleep, making it a great addition to any bedroom. Notably, its sleep and timer options dim the purifier’s lights and lower the volume of the sound emitted by the purifier. It can also be set to run for two, four, or eight hours.
For bigger spaces like the living room, choose the Pure Air Purifier 30 (P11,999.75 SRP). It boasts of features like Anion and UV Light that help sanitize the air more efficiently. Its digital display changes colors to let you know how clean or dirty the air is: green for good, yellow for moderate, and red for bad. There’s also a child lock feature so kids won’t be able to change settings accidentally, and can be set to run from one to 12 hours.
Aside from trapping small particles like dust, pollen, mold spores, and airborne mites, both air purifiers can also trap larger particles like human and pet hair, and eliminate bad odors and harmful gases in the air. Moreover, they feature backlit digital displays, multiple speed settings — three for the Pure Air Purifier 10, four for the Pure Air Purifier 30 — and a filter change indicator to let users know that the filter needs to be cleaned.
Give yourself peace of mind as your family continues to stay indoors by making sure every nook and cranny of your home and even the air inside are germ-free.
