It is ironic that the bathroom, which is where we go to clean ourselves up every day, is the one place in your home that can be a breeding ground for all sorts of harmful bacteria.

Because of this area’s damp and humid environment, the items that we keep inside the T&B can quickly collect plenty of gross substances—which is why it is absolutely imperative to swap out these items regularly. Here are five items in your bathroom you should replace, pronto.

Towels

Many of us will agree that towels are the most important element in any bathroom. But since we use our towels almost every time we are in our bathrooms, it is just as important to make sure that they are kept as clean as possible—which might be difficult, especially if they’re kept in such a humid environment. Because of this, the easiest alternative is to replace them on a regular basis.

Bath towels, if they’re hung post-shower and allowed to dry completely between use, can be used up to four times, but should be washed weekly. Meanwhile, hand towels need to be replaced daily, since they get dirtier faster.

Bath mats

Like towels, bath mats tend to become dirty and wet fast, so they also need to be hung up after usage and allowed to dry well. If your bath mats also receive plenty of foot traffic, these should be changed on a weekly basis.

Toothbrushes

You may already know this, but toothbrushes need to be changed at least every three months, since their bristles can wear out quite fast. Aside from replacing your toothbrush, you should keep it covered, as it is exposed to humidity and possibly even splashes of toilet water!

Shower curtains

Shower curtains are another magnet for nasty mildew. When you notice that mildew is beginning to build up on your shower curtains, it’s time to give it a thorough wash.

Bathing accessories

Accessories like loofahs and sponges are helpful bath tools, since they can scrub off plenty of dirt and dead skin cells. It is for this exact reason that these accessories should be swapped out regularly, especially if they’re constantly left damp. In particular, loofahs should be chucked to the trash every three weeks, so you can avoid showering with a bacteria-filled pouf.
