While we’re busy planning Christmas get-togethers and reunions, we also need to schedule a general cleaning before 2015 ends. Doing so allows you to welcome the New Year with a fresh perspective and a neat space that you can decorate and liven up with new pieces and must-haves.

Prepare a to-do list and consider these tips from interior designers:

Edit your to-do list

To be able to work and clean the home efficiently, you need to have a practical and doable checklist. Be realistic and set a schedule that works for you. “Segregate the list: those that can be done by the end of the year and those that you intend to do next year. This way, we get to finish, close, and finalize all hanging commitments, errands, and duties before the new year,” suggests interior designer Kat Villanueva-Lopez.

Review and check the things that you have at home

After 12 months, check your cabinets; go through drawers, and clean closets. See if you have items that you no longer use and need. “Purging the home of things not actually needed and wanted can have a therapeutic effect. You will feel lighter because not only will you create space for yourself and the more important items in your home but the letting go of material things has a positive effect on your psyche,” shares interior designer Kimi Manuel.

Check your appliances

Are all the bulbs working? Are there faulty light switches and sockets? Do you have an appliance that needs immediate repair? Perhaps your kitchen and bathroom tiles need re-grouting. “This is just the perfect time to check the overall maintenance of your home. Make a punch list of home improvements [that you need] to do in time for 2016,” explains interior designer Anla Li-Tan.

RL Tip: Start with projects that you can do on your own and items that require minimal professional help. Bigger renovation projects require proper planning and bigger budget.

Donate and sell some of your items

Do you have old clothes, accessories, and other essentials that are still in good condition but have spent years in the storage room? Bring these out and sort which ones are perfect for selling. You can also bring some of the items to orphanages and charities. Visiting your chosen organization can become your annual project.

Deal with pests

“All kinds of pests are surely unwelcome next year. Make sure your lovely home is well-maintained by pest control experts to safeguard your health as well as your home,” Anla adds.
