3 Reasons To Color Wash Your Floors

Bring your space to life with this subtle design switch

When repainting a space, we usually think about adding an accent wall or sprucing up the ceiling. We hardly ever consider giving the floor a fresh coat of color.

While bare and hardwood floors are classic staples in every traditional home, painting over them can make a room feel warm and bright with minimal effort. They are also incredibly easy-to-maintain because you no longer need to deal with dusty carpets. What's not to like about that?

Whether it's a checkerboard pattern or a bold stripe, here are three reasons why you should color wash your floors:

There are no rules to follow

When it comes to colored floors, you can let your imagination run wild. From polka dots, detailed paisley prints to abstract splotches, you're free to create whatever suits your taste. Just make sure you choose a print that will match the rest of your fittings to keep your place from looking overdecorated.

It's great at hiding flaws

Sanding, refurnishing, and restaining—all of these methods require hiring a professinal and can make an unexpected dent in your bank account. Color washing is a great temporary solution when you want to conceal scratches and dents on the floor. It doesn't only work with wood, it's also great with thicker materials like concrete or linoleum.

It's incredibly versatile

Depending on your color and pattern choice, painted floors easily suit any look—ranging from traditional to modern. For a more updated look, try using a vibrant shade of turquoise paired with warm-colored furnishings to really wake up a room.

RL Tip: Before you work on your floors, make sure you sand it down properly to remove existing stain or finish. Doing this will also help improve the adhesion of new paint. Consider using two coats or more of polyurethane-based enamel paint and remember to dry well in between coats.
