Simple and major updates around the home—whether it’s repainting your cabinets or retiling the bathroom—can up its value and make it more enticing to potential buyers. If you’re looking into selling your current place to invest in a new house, you may want to get started on key kitchen improvement projects that can help improve your home’s overall aesthetic. Interior designer and broker Rochelle Granali shares these tips:

1. First things first—clean your kitchen.

A spic-and-span cooking area is a sight to see. Declutter the space, get rid of broken items, discard expired food, and make sure you repair everything that’s broken.

2. Invest in a sturdy countertop.

It’s safe to say that the countertop is one of the focal points in the kitchen. Don’t settle for less by picking a material that won’t last. Opting for a beautiful natural stone like granite, quartz, or marble may cost you now, but it will definitely pay off in the long run.

RL Tip: You may also want to work with an off-white solid surface countertop, available at Rockstone for P7,500 (per linear meter).

3. Ask a professional to check the plumbing fixtures.

Make sure the pipes and fixtures are in good working condition to avoid leaks and bigger problems. If you have money to spare, you can replace these with new ones as well.

RL Tip: Shop for quality kitchen fixtures and appliances at Teka, available at Kuysen.

4. Make it colorful.

Repainting the walls of your kitchen can instantly update its look. Keep in mind that walls with a fresh coat of paint can make your cooking area look clean, too. Choose a color that matches your home’s overall color scheme—if you are feeling bold, bright colors like yellow and orange can liven it up.

5. If your cabinets are showing signs of wear and tear, replace them with new ones.

Installing new cabinets can give your kitchen an updated look. You may also want to install extra shelves where you can keep plates, jars of ingredients, and other essentials. If you are looking for budget-friendly ideas, give your existing storage pieces a makeover by changing its pulls and knobs.

RL Tip: Find lovely wooden cabinet knobs and diamond style knobs (P299 per set of 2) at H&M Home. Shop for chic drawer pulls (for less than P100) at True Value.

6. Add basic appliances.

Accomplish tasks easily by having reliable must-haves like a new stove and a refrigerator. There are options in the market with energy-saving features to help you save on electricity. Don’t be afraid to ask the store attendants about each item’s features so you can pick the best one that’s within your budget.

RL Tip: Check out Haier's 3-door Refrigerator and 5-burner Stove and Oven, available at all leading appliance centers.
