Cebu is popularly known as the design capital of the country, serving as a base for furniture exporters. In fact, many Cebuano designers have exhibited and garnered awards and praises internationally. With innovative styles and a respect for their roots, Cebuano design is present everywhere you look. Get to know some of their notable furniture designers and manufacturers, and visit a special trade show as well.

Coast Pacific

Known for their modern, sleek, and sculptural outdoor furniture, Coast Pacific’s pieces are hand-built by skilled Cebuano artisans. Their exhibit of their Ellipse daybeds and their large woven dome huts were showstoppers at the last Philippine International Furniture Show (PIFS).

Design Ventures

Designer Debbie Palao and her husband Gus have run furniture and décor company Design Ventures for more than 30 years, exhibiting in major furniture shows like the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. Her pieces highlight the best of Philippine indigenous materials, but have a bit of whimsy and humor. She also sells some of her pieces at HoliCow, her shop with an advocacy.

Detalia Aurora

Another furniture industry superstar, Detalia Aurora has been around for more than 20 years, and export to Europe, the US, South America, and even Africa. They are best known for the intricate and painstaking craftsmanship of their furniture pieces. You can also buy some of their products in Manila at Casa Ligna.

General Bleu

Designer Maybelline Te’s family has run Arkwell and Tequesta—major furniture exporters—for decades. They have recently launched General Bleu, which also caters to the local market. “We will have a new line that we’ll market to local and international residential and hospitality clients,” says Te. “I’ll probably design a few fun capsule collections for General Bleu from time to time.”

Mehitabel

This 70-year–old manufacturer of rattan and wood furniture produces some of the finest pieces in Cebu, and this makes Mehitabel a veritable institution. Their furnishings range from classic rattan chairs and sofas to avant-garde woven creations.

O+S

Formerly called Outdoor Solutions, O+S has been in the business of catering to export buyers. In 2012, they introduced their line of well-crafted, contemporary-modern outdoor furniture to the local market as well. Check out their sculptural Cobra accent chair and stool (main photo above, right).
