A Pampanga Eco-Resort That Is An Artist’s Dream

“This is the reason why I got into furniture. It’s for me to do this. Selling my pieces was just a bonus. This was the vision of our family. All the furniture is custom-made,” says artist and sculptor Niccolo Jose of Green Canyon Eco Art Resort, which he co-owns with his family.

Easily accessible through NLEX and SCTEX and just past the scenic Sacobia Bridge in Clark, Pampanga, Green Canyon is a great alternative to usual leisure hubs. Built with eco-friendly materials such as argon glass used for window glass panes and reclaimed wood from old houses, the resort is indeed “green.” Passive cooling techniques are also incorporated; hence, cool wind greets you as you enter the hotel lobby and other facilities in the resort. Even lahar is used as cement for the construction.

With Niccolo at the helm of the resort's furniture and design, his parents handling the operations and construction, and his brother Abel Jose in marketing, Green Canyon Resort runs like a well-oiled machine, making it a prime vacation spot in the area.

“Because we are the first developers here, we want to set the standard for green design,” says Niccolo. “The location is good. It’s going to boom in the next twenty years. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.” The family applied for PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) accreditation, which granted them reprieve from paying taxes as long as they hire and train local employees and follow international standards in constructing the resort’s facilities.

All these fulfill Green Canyon’s tag line: Resort to your imagination. Whether you’re a lone soul longing for a vacation, or a whole bunch of officemates out on a team-building seminar, there are a lot of things you can do at Green Canyon—from hiking, biking, swimming, to sharing stories around a bonfire. Just take your pick!

Central chandelier

A customized “chandelier” made from recycled bottles hangs from the central space of the hotel. Niccolo Jose made sure to use a lot of eco-friendly and upcycled materials in the creation of this resort. The wood was also reclaimed from demolished houses.

Stairwell

The interiors of the entire resort are furnished with Niccolo’s wood creations, which are undulating and organic in form. Check out his furniture pieces and sculptures at Studio 10.10 at the LRI Design Plaza, 210 N. Garcia St., Makati City.

Guest rooms

All of the 47 rooms function as galleries for Niccolo’s collection and masterpieces, as the artist-designer’s workshop is located within the area. And if you fancy a piece, you can have it customized to your specifications, and he’ll personally deliver it to your home.

Some of the rooms, with their cozy bunk beds, are perfect for either a big barkada or a family. Here, even the wall sconce lights are sculptures!

Lounge

The resort features prototypes of Niccolo’s furniture collections. The artist maintains a furniture workshop on the premises, making it easy for the artist to create new pieces for the resort.

Palette Restaurant

The resort’s resto-café uses locally sourced ingredients to prepare their fresh and healthy farm-to-table dishes. The restaurant also has an outdoor area which overlooks the beautiful mountain vista.

Pool

Green Canyon opened in October 2014. Before this, years were spent for systematic and meticulous planning. As of this writing, only seven of the 29 hectares of land have been utilized, leaving a lot of room for expansion.

Green Canyon Eco Art Resort is located at San Vicente Road, Clark Special Economic Zone, Bamban, Pampanga, tel. (045) 499-4800, or visit their URL greencanyon.com.ph and Facebook page.
