6 Things To Do With The Weird Space Above Your Cabinets

If you’re staring at the awkward, dusty gap between your ceiling and your cabinets, get on your feet and transform it into the storage space you’ve always needed

Do you ever wonder what else you can do with the empty space between the top of your fixed cabinets and the ceiling? In most homes, they are just left to collect dust; but in fact, it could be the secret storage spot we all need—so take advantage of that space! Here are six ideas to maximize it:

Add an extra shelf.

If the space is high enough (approximately 60cm and more), congratulations! You have unlocked a bonus storage spot. You can install an extra shelf to create a two-tiered storage area. By doing so, you will have more space to keep your things and a much more organized spot that will collect less dust.

Show off your artwork.

Display an assemblage of small paintings or sculptures, framed prints and photographs, and other collectibles on top of the cabinet. This gives the area a pop of color, and adds visual interest to that awkward gap.

Display trinkets.

Sometimes, built-in hanging cabinets are installed with just a teeny-tiny gap between the top and the bottom of the ceiling, making it virtually unusable as a storage space. Short of boarding up the space, it could be a spot to showcase tiny knickknacks that can add a little quirk to the room, like small ceramic houses, or tiny fairy lights.

Store your liquor.

If the space is tall enough to accommodate the height of a bottle, use the spot to line up your bottles of liquor. Be careful, though, because when heat rises, it can ruin the quality of some types of alcohol—like wine.

Stash your bulky luggage.

The built-in cabinets or wardrobes in our bedrooms usually have a standard depth of 800mm: this is a wide enough space to keep your luggage or off-season clothes.

Install an AC.

The placement of air conditioning units sometimes ruins the design or the look of the wall or space it is fitted on. To make it part of the whole, have it installed in between the space of the top of the cabinet and the ceiling. Style the area afterward—like adding some jars and vases to the mix in order to remove the focus on the AC.
