A country-style or traditional home won’t be complete without the proper architectural details and trimmings. You may think these elements are mostly decorative, but each trim has its own purpose and it can even add to the curb appeal of your space. Here are the most basic ones you should watch for when buying a farmhouse-inspired home:

1. Molding

A strip of material made out of wood, plaster or metal that is attached to the wall to form a decorative pattern. You can also use it to frame windows, doors or any other openings.

2. Baseboard

This is usually a flat molding that conceals the joint between the floor and the wall. It frames the hardwood floors, too.

3. Cornice

A decorative molding that hides the joint between floor and ceiling. Traditional cornices are often shaped at a 45-degree angle.

4. Rosette

A circular, ornamental molding that is often used to conceal the attachment of a lighting fixture to a ceiling. It usually comes in intricate patterns and serves as an accent piece in any room.

5. Jamb

A strip of material or a small board that forms the sides of a door or window.

6. Wainscoting

A wood panel that lines half of the wall. Wainscots were originally used to prevent chairs from scratching the wall. It also serves as an easy way to add detail to a rustic-inspired space.
