Turn a blank space into an inviting retreat

Whether it's an old nursery or a storage room you intend to revamp, an extra room at home holds a lot of possibilities. You can turn it into a closet, a mini library, or a bedroom meant for guests. If you're leaning toward the latter, keep in mind that you shouldn't scrimp. Sleeping areas need to be cozy, comfortable, and homey. Here's how you can make it happen:

1. Furnish it with basic furniture pieces.

Make sure you invest in a sturdy bed, a desk, and a chair. If the room is small and adding a cabinet seems impossible, choose a bed with hidden storage underneath. You can also install wall-mounted shelves or opt to place a slim bookcase in a corner, too.

2. Keep it well-ventilated.

"Add openings and windows. A small awning window will help a lot. If it’s not possible, add an exhaust fan to avoid having an enclosed feel,” says interior designer Rod Lascano.

3. Spruce it up with simple decor.

Since the bedroom won't be used all the time, decorate it with little accessories and a few wall accents. You can paint the walls with light colors to make the room seem bigger and wider.

4. Choose the sheets wisely.

Create a hotel-like feel with clean and crisp sheets. While you can stick to white, you may want to work with dark-colored linens like dark blue and navy blue. These options won't get dirty easily and would look nice when paired with light-colored walls.

5. Prep a box of toiletries.

There are instances when guests unexpectedly arrive. Be ready for such visits by having a box filled with extra slippers, fresh towels, and a few toiletries that they can use. Make sure you keep the room clean and sparkling as well so they can settle in quickly.
