Before we start delving into more technical terms, you should know that there are two general light sources: natural and artificial. Sunlight is a natural light source, and is very flattering to the skin, but we don’t have it 24/7. For this reason, artificial light was invented. Here are different types you can choose from:

1. The incandescent bulb is your standard bulb that comes in different shapes and sizes. It emits a warm and inviting glow in the evening, but can look unnatural during the day. It’s best combined with other lighting sources like halogen.

2. Halogen is the top choice for places where white light is needed such as work areas and reading nooks. It’s also especially great for homes with unusually shaped ceilings.

3. Par lights are spotlights available in incandescent or halogen form and are installed primarily in gardens.

4. Fluorescent is another major artificial light source—which is usually employed as task or general lighting in kitchens, garages, and other work areas. It is four times more efficient than the incandescent but is flatter and less focused.

5. Fiber optics aren’t usually used in homes, but it’s good to know about them, too. A remote light source is trained on one end of glass fibers that emit light ano the other end. Think the lit stars on the ceiling of cinema houses.
