There is something special about living in an ancestral home. It could be creating memories with your family through generations, celebrating milestones you've achieved growing up or maybe you just enjoy staying in a house from a different era—either way, it's still an irreplaceable experience.

These things and more are the reasons why a lot of people who live in older houses work hard to preserve the past through interior design. If you're looking into doing the same thing, we've listed down a few design tips that can help you enhance the vintage beauty of your home. Check them out:

1. Be wary of keeper furniture.

When decorating an older home, there is usually a lot of decluttering to do. While it is much easier to decide to just get rid of everything, make sure you go through your stash before doing so. You never know—you may be able to find a few gems and antiques that work with your dream aesthetic hidden somewhere.

2. Decorate in layers.

More often than not, ancestral houses have a lot of detail in the architecture and piling on a ton of accessories at once can make it look over-the-top. Add pieces one at a time until you find the look you like and don’t be afraid to experiment with different silhouettes just for fun.

3. Add in modern elements.

Give your classic home a unique and present-day spin by adding a few on-trend picks like tall mirrors, black and white accessories or pastel pieces. This will help keep your home current without losing its old-fashioned charm.

4. Accessorize in twos.

Remember, it’s all about balance. Displaying things in pairs can make a home feel more elegant. This design technique works, especially for older homes, as symmetrical decor complements intricate lines and structures.

5. Choose color carefully.

Heritage houses don’t benefit from loud colors and shades of neon. Instead, consider going for light neutrals, grays and blues to keep with the timeless vibe of the space. Painting the rooms of the house in different tones of the same color helps give it a unified look, too.
