Deciding to sell your home isn’t as simple as buying a new top or lipstick online. There are a lot of things that need to be worked on including renovation, mortgage bills and one of the most important tasks—staging for an open house.

Staging is the process of styling your home a certain way to make it appealing to potential buyers. It’s all about highlighting the best features of your space and concealing what may be less desirable. Don’t know where to start? Check out our handy guide below:

1. Simplify.

When staging a home, it’s best to remove anything that adds a personal touch to your space—photos, souvenirs, and art. Think about it as stripping rooms down to bare essentials, as if everything is a space for guests.

2. Stick to a neutral color scheme.

Neutrals have the power to draw attention away from the decor so buyers can focus on the style and build of the house. Try investing in beige walls, white furniture, cream accessories and maybe a tan area rug.

3. Style your bookshelves (if you have them).

Here’s a trade secret: buyers love built-in bookshelves—however, they won’t be able to appreciate it if it's filled with clutter and decade-old books. Instead of showcasing your personal belongings, try arranging different accessories across the shelves for a boutique feel.

4. Conceal corners that need repair.

If you’re pressed for time and you aren’t able to do all the necessary repairs before your open house, distract potential buyers by displaying interesting art or furniture pieces in those nooks.

5. Try staining instead of repainting.

If the wooden elements of your home (kitchen cabinets, stools, tables) are looking a little tired, try staining them a new finish to give it a boost. Unlike painting, it costs a lot cheaper and it looks more elegant.
