It's easy to fall in love with the Scandinavian style—with its clean lines, crisp aesthetic, and an overall vibe that's comforting. If you've been planning to revamp the home, you may want to consider going Scandi. The style is not only bright and inviting, it's functional and allows you to experiment with decor, too. Get started on your Scandinavian-inspired space with these ideas:

1. Nature, nature everywhere.

Scandinavian design is nothing without its clear relationship with nature. If you’re lucky enough to have a home looking out to trees and panoramic views, you’ve already got an in. If like most city folk, your space is surrounded by the concrete jungle, deck your home in all-natural materials that bring the outdoors in such as wood, weaves, and even indoor plants.

2. Keep it clutter-free.

Filipinos may struggle resisting the urge to fill every inch of space with décor and accessories. If you’re looking to go Scandi when it comes to your home, it’s time to get your Marie Kondo on and strip away the unnecessary until you’re left with the bare essentials.

3. Create monochrome magic.

Plain is perfect as far as Scandinavian palettes go. Keep majority of your surfaces clean and simple. Beiges, whites, and muted grays form the perfect canvas for interiors that are easy on the eyes.

4. Remember: light is right.

Most Scandi spaces are bathed in beautiful, natural light. If your home has floor to ceiling windows, or sliding doors, make sure that you keep those curtains drawn to allow ambient light to filter through. Stuck in a home without enough windows? Make sure to mimic the soft glow of daylight with proper lighting fixtures.

5. Look into having three-dimensional texture.

If the plainness of a neutral color palette bores you, know that you can play around with textures when it comes to imbibing the Scandinavian aesthetic. Soft tufted upholstery contrasted against rougher, more natural weaved rugs, or even a mix of fabrics when it comes to your throw pillow collection will provide tactile interest to your space.

6. Showcase wood.

No Scandi space is complete without furniture decked in wood, or all-natural wood flooring. If you can afford to skip the laminates and go for real wood instead, take the more natural option.

7. Highlight line art.

One visually arresting element of Scandinavian design is their penchant for using graphic line art. Curtains with light and sketchy doodles, bed linens adorned with simple etchings, and even kitchen accessories with that signature IKEA-look all contribute to a well-decorated space.

8. Choose colors well.

While a monochrome palette is encouraged, pops of color are also highly recommended. Be smart and selective when choosing where and how to place your pops of color so as not to overwhelm the eye.

9. Invest in organic details.

With nature as an overarching theme in most Scandinavian spaces, making a move towards natural materials and all things organic gets a thumbs up.

10. Have open spaces.

Keep everything light and breezy with a floor plan that encourages openness. If you can afford to knock down walls in order to expand a living room into a living and dining, for example, do so. This is one area where bigger is definitely better.
