A primer in case you’ve been living under a rock, blogger Laureen Uy is one-third of the fashionable Uy siblings—her older sister Liz is a fashion stylist and an international digital curator, while Vince takes care of creative direction for Summit Media titles, most notably fashion magazine Preview. Her siblings’ career paths make it less surprising for the youngest Uy to pursue a similar track. Having made a mark for herself in the local blogosphere with her experimental take on dressing up, documented on her blog, Break My Style, one would expect that her dwelling would take after her OOTD sensibilities—which it does.

The self-proclaimed maximalist continues her penchant for prints and colors when she took over Vince’s three-bedroom unit. She decided to take down the walls and convert it into a one-bedroom dwelling, with the second and third bedrooms as walk-in closets for personal belongings and work, respectively. The renovation was completed after a year and a half—and the results were true to her “break my style” philosophy.

One could say that the renovation project is a family affair, with Laureen not having to worry about her furniture, thanks to her parents and siblings. Meanwhile, her cousin, interior decorator Elle Uy Aguell helped put everything together. The Uys’ pre-loved pieces have found their new home in the fashionista’s unit, leaving Laureen to take care of purchasing fewer furniture pieces. This did not pose a problem at all—even with their distinct tastes, the Uys share a love for tasteful inspirations, beautiful pieces, and fabulous designs.

Front door

The side of the front door facing Laureen’s interiors is painted pink, while the other side is painted in dark brown. Upon entry, the first artwork you’d see on the wall is a painting of Laureen by visual artist Archie Geotina. This also happens to be her first art purchase.

Foyer

A stylish array of accouterments adorn Laureen’s foyer. The highlight of this space is a vinyl record player that sister Liz gave her as a gift.

Living Area

Laureen kept some of the items in the condo intact, including a vintage brass light fixture. Wanting to personalize each detail, the new homeowner had the chandelier painted in teal. Vince went ballistic when he found out, says Laureen. “Now that I know, I’m more careful about this stuff,” she adds.

Living Area

The living area, with pieces mostly from Heima, showcases Laureen’s love for colors and prints. White walls and furniture pieces serve as contrast to the bursts of patterns and colors. The spot also faces a magnificent 180-degree view of Makati’s central business district.

Living Area

One can easily see what Laureen values the most—it’s all in the details. On this particular coffee table are books on design, travel and fashion, souvenirs from London, and artificial flowers for a feminine touch.

Dining Area

The entire space is bursting with patterns and colors, yet Laureen managed to make everything look balanced. This was done by strategically placing busy patterns amidst plain and muted colors in different areas, resulting in an atmosphere that does not look overwhelming or too busy.

Dining Area

Laureen has a mix-your-own-drink rule for her friends—no wonder her dining area is home to a wide selection of drinks.

Dining Area

The blogger also happens to be a budding art collector. Laureen decided to tone things down a bit with white walls and pieces to let the different works of art stand out.

Dining Area

The items in the dining room shelves pertain to the homeowner’s interests like reading and entertaining, as well as things that she likes such as scents and greens.

Dining Area

This bright yellow cabinet is one of the pre-loved items that came from the Uy family house. As expected, even Laureen’s glassware lean on the fun and colorful side.

Kitchen

Laureen kept the brick walls in the kitchen, but had them painted white. Complementing the design element are the black-and-white diagonal stripes on the floor, which help create an illusion of larger space for the area.

Home Office

Unlike the other spots in the unit, her home office looks light and more feminine. Pink-and-white striped wallpapers adorn the walls, while the view of the business district allows natural light to stream into the space.

Bedroom

The bedroom is also an exercise in design restraint. Laureen made sure the space is cozy, as she looks forward to spending downtime in her Heima bed especially after coming from a trip.

Bedroom

The fashion blogger decided on this pretty and feminine wallpaper for a personal touch. The design still goes well with Vince’s lamp and side table.

Bedroom

One interesting piece in Laureen’s bedroom is a ceramic owl lamp from Heima. Surrounding it are framed photos, travel souvenirs, accessories, and blooms in a vase.

Bathroom

Surprisingly, Laureen’s spacious bathroom is stark white. It has a vanity counter, a huge mirror, and a clawfoot tub where she can take a relaxing bath.

Bathroom

These elegant pieces suit the all-white bathroom and are noticeably minimally styled—a welcome break from the brights and patterns seen in other areas of Laureen’s abode.

Decor Detail

Laureen is fond of keeping mementos, one of which is this modern Alessi bowl.
