Stars were out that night

Working in a home magazine, I’m used to attending events furniture launches and groundbreaking ceremonies. So it was quite a (delightful) shock for me to attend the opening of SMDC’s (SM Development Corp’s) grand showroom last week. We braved long gowns, high heels, gate crashers, and a million uzis just to see their celebrity endorser Anne Curtis get serenaded by Christian Bautista as she descended the showroom staircase (sorry blurry pic I was being jostled about)…

Now I’m not a big fan of Anne Curtis as an actress, but I must admit, in person she did have that otherwordly “star aura”.

And now let’s talk about the showroom itself. Breaking free from the cramped, piggy-backed-to-a-building showroom space, this is a standalone modern building with a huge reception area and all the different showrooms upstairs. Here’s the model unit of their 16sqm (!) condo…

…A little bit tight. The 20sqm unit seems cozier…

…but I prefer the one-bedroom unit instead. Visit the SMDC Showroom at the Mall of Asia Complex at Pasay City.

Mango, Zara, Rustan’s, and other retail giants are having their big sales this month. So it’s just right that home retail goes on sale too! Check out Makati design destination LRI’s building-wide sale this weekend…

And while you’re there, might as well check out  KISH on the second floor…

…I’ve always loved their items, especially their visual merchandising. LRI is at 210 Nicanor Garcia St., Bel Air III, Makati City. See you!

New Stores part deux

This is a continuation of my bit on new home stores in the metro. Yesterday I attended the launch of furniture/lifestyle store Domus, which carries German brands Hulsta furniture and Parador luxury flooring.

For lack of a press kit, the kind sales assistants explained that their specialty was engineered wood for interior finishing. I checked it out, and the quality was really good. Also worth noting were the wood panels with various patterns and graphics, which can used for both accent wall and floor (!).

I must say, it is more of a store to the design trade rather than a lifestyle store.

My two cents’ worth: the showroom is a tad bit tiny for their products. Some of the furniture pieces were quite good, but it would have been worlds better if they had been set up in a sprawling space.

Nevertheless, check out Domus at the lower ground floor, Greenbelt 5, Makati City.

New shops this 2011

Happy New Year! :) ‘Tis the month for cleaning up and renovations, and what better way to update than go shopping? Thankfully, the tail end of 2010 has seen the opening of a lot of new home and lifestyle stores. Like who hasn’t gone to Muji yet? Even those who aren’t a minimalist at heart are dying to get their beige/black/gray clothing basics, delicate toiletries, and oh-so-nifty storage containers.

And Focus Global has just launched their spiffy second showroom at a tony address away from their main branch at Pioneer, the Greenbelt Residences at Greenbelt, Makati. Take a look at the facade of the new Ethan Allan showroom…

Or how about something off the beaten track? Check out Eclectic Living, a tiny but quaint shop in San Antonio Village. They specialize in custom-made furniture and accessories…

…but I especially like their quirky pillowcases. Visit them at 9803 Kamagong St., San Antonio Village, Makati. (Muji photo by Jun Pinzon, Ethan Allan courtesy of Focus Global)
